Quote of the Day

"It is never enough to wear a clean dress and comfortable shoes and be done – fashion is a Jewish mother on crack"
-Tanya Gold, writer of this Guardian article.

She has a pretty big fashion chip on her shoulder. What do you think???

Birthday Cakes and Dance Parties

This year I was very adamant that I did not want a birthday party. Nope. No way. Last year was too amazing to ever top and I needed a year off. Plus there isn't a proper party dress in my closet to wear. And lately I have been feeling more style-less than stylish. Jeans and a sweater seem to be my uniform these days. It's the cold. I have to drag myself just to go out. A serious pep talk to get me showered and out the door. "You can do this. It will be fun. Think of pools and summertime and cookouts."

So back to my party. This year I decided on a quiet night in with girls. The ladies that keep me sane and let me be outrageous all at the same time. The ones that I want to bottle up so that one day when we all don't live blocks away I can take them out, set them on the counter and have them there with me. It's lobster, butter, biscuits, and champagne. Every birthday needs champagne. And I wouldn't have it any other way. I can feel the love now. (Seriously I can... either that or my headband is squeezing my head too hard.)

This year is different from other years. I am on the edge of closing this chapter and ready to start the next one. Hell if I know what the actual chapter will contain. But amen to the fact that my lovely lovely ladies will be there with me. Ok fine, maybe I will wear a party dress this year. I just need a lobster bib to match!

Weekend Revelations

1. Shopping for other people is more fun than shopping for myself.

2. Horizontal stripes now hold a special place in my heart.

3. No matter what anyone says, leggings are where it is at.

4. Sunday + mimosas + friends = best idea ever.

Haiti Survival Kit Drive

All week I have thought of things I wanted to blog about. But to be honest, I am finding it a little hard to write about fashion or style or silly things when there is so much devastation in Haiti right now. I was laying in bed this morning watching the news and literally could not wrap my brain it.

But there is something we can all do to help the people of Haiti. The Embassy of the Republic of Haiti is having a survival kit drive this Sunday, January 17th from 11am - 4pm.

V Magazine's "Size" Issue

V Magazine is one of my favorite reads. The colors, the spreads, the "f*ck you" they throw to to all things conservative. And now I truly heart them just a little bit more. Their February issue is being dubbed their "Size" issue, filled with all plus sized models who look pretty damn hot if you ask me.The NY Times had a few things to say about it, mostly all good. But apparantly not everyone thinks this is as great as I do. Which has me asking... what do you think about an issue dedicated to plus sized models? Showing respect or just plain showey?

Days 3 & 4: Not Much Action

Just a quick update on the raw food experiment. It really hasn't been too much different from what I normally eat. Though dinner has been alot of veggies in the blender to make some sort of "creamy soup". Breakfast is a smoothie with spinach, apple, pineapple and strawberries. Lunch is a raw barley like grain (moving on to my wheatberries now that they finally sprouted) and dinner is the soup experiment du jour. Last night was curry corn. The flavors aren't bad, but some sushi would be better.
My skin look clearer, my mental clarity is better, but I have my third migraine this week. Probably totally unrelated. Three more days to go --- no problem baby!

Doonan's Tinselgate

If you are nosey like me, then you will love (capital LOVE) this little piece written by Simon Doonon on his experience decorating the White House for Christmas. I haven't seen any photos of what he did (sad bear), but just wait til the last paragraph of the article. It's amazing. Insert huge people crush here.

Day 2: Good to Be Green

This morning's smoothie went much better. The best part was the color... can you say hello bright green? I couldn't resist taking and picture. Though I did feel slightly silly walking down the street drinking this bright green concoction out of my clear plastic cup.
Aside from that, nothing new. Awful migraine all day, but I don't think that is related.

Beddy time.

kisses,
me

Day 1: Not So Smoothe

First day of the raw food cleanse. I woke up feeling pretty good. Blasted a little Jay Z on the ipod, my hair was working for me and my rumbling tummy said it was time for breakfast. Now my normal breakfast is a cup of coffee with a lot of milk on the way to work and some hi-fiber cereal with almond milk at work. But from the little post-it on my fridge, I saw that today was smoothie day (yes, I made a post-it for each meal with the recipe).

Last night I went to whole foods and bought raw wheat berries and buck wheat kernals that need to be soaked over night. Then you set them out and they sprout in a few days. I did as told... I soaked my wheat. The buckwheat was soft and smelled a little nutty... oh yeah, I bought roasted buckwheat. Whatever - details, details. The wheat berries were still pretty hard. But my post-it said to put a few tablespoons of each into the blender with an apple and banana and a delicious smoothie would come out. And that's what I did.

What came out was more like the consistency of vomit and tasted like I licked the floor of a bar after New Year's Eve. I am sorry if that is disgusting, but imagine having it in your mouth. I mean, I still drank it. Waste not want not. But it wasn't fun.

And about an hour later I had my "aha!" moment. I wasn't supposed to use either thing until they had sprouted. SPROUTED I say! Then it lends a sort of sweet and smoothe texture.

Scusi.

Oh Baby I Like It Raw

After eating and drinking my way through the holidays, tomorrow starts the first day of a 7 day raw food cleanse. Be gone all of that sugar and alcohol and butter and wine and everything else I ate and loved. I have to be honest, I really had no idea what I was getting into when I agreed to do it with a friend. But now that I have read up and gone to Whole Foods to stock up I am pretty excited to start. Or as I have repeatedly told anyone in hearing distance all day today "I can't wait to get that metallic taste in my mouth that shows that my body is detoxing!"

I am going to try to post about it everyday and will definitely let you know when the metallic taste arrives. Wish me luck!
