Halloween Is Almost Here
Is your costume ready? Is the candy in a bowl by the door? Have the pumpkins been carved?
Tomorrow night we are all going to a costume party and while I have to admit that I secretly hate picking out a costume, I love the dress up part.
And the costume for this year... I am going with a friend as Heidi and Spencer from The Hills... complete with fake eyelashes and trashy corset. It will be very, very frightening!

We Want Style
Dear Project Beltway,
You used to be so cute back in the day when you posted fun shots of people on the street and you talked about what they were wearing. But now I am worried that we have lost you to the DC fashion Georgetown crowd who talks more about upper-end fashion while ingoring actual unique, creative, off-beat, I don't know how it works but it does, style. You know what I mean...
I admire you for going from a simple blogger to someone who has made a name for yourself. And as a person you seem to be quite lovely. I just wish you would use your power for good, take chances and really show what the District is made of outside of the glossy pages of DC Style, Washingtonian and the other mags that seem to want to rule the scene.
kisses,
me

Taking the Shame Out of Shame Shopping
Embarrassed to be driving that big fancy car when everyone else is feeling the pinch? Don't want your neighbors to see that huge UPS box being delivered from Saks? You, my dear, are 'shame shopping'.
Well worry no more. NYC-based retailer Net-a-Porter is now offering "discreet packaging" for all New York Premier orders. Which means that you can now get your $500 Marc Jacob shoes delivered in a plain brown paper bag. That'll throw off those nosey neighbors! (this also works if you have a husband trying to reign in your spending habits)
Props to them for making light of the shiesty economic climate with a cheeky marketing spin.

Word of the Day
Recessionista
n. a person predicting a recession or a person who believes a recession would benefit the long-term health of the economy
n. the style maven on a budget
“You should know that while the fashionista may have locked herself in the vault with her tiaras, her younger, hipper sister — recessionista — is at the mall finding designer threads at discount prices. That’s because recessionistas aren’t letting a little thing like falling stock prices and rising gas bills get in the way of their wardrobe.”

When Music and Clothes Combine
The Washington Post has an article about how more and more stores are having in-house djs spin in order to attract younger customers. I remember the first time I encountered a dj in a clothing store. It was about 6 years ago and my friend Zack had gotten a weekend gig spinning in a small women's boutique. He described it as feeling "incredibly out of place". I thought of it as the best idea ever. And while I have to admit that a dj in Lord & Taylor makes me think that the trend may have jumped the shark, any job that pays in clothing is a good job to me.
But who am to judge... read about it here.

Linens 'n Things Closing Doors
It's a sad, sad day... Linens 'n Things has announced that they are going out of business. It's rough out there for a retailer right now! The (very slight) silver lining is that they are having a huge sale.
Sigh...
Not Quite a Media Maven
I've spent the past hour debating back and forth in my head whether I want to go to the Media Mavens party tonight or whether I want to go for a run and chill on my couch.
The answer: a compromise. I am walking home with a friend and will decide on the way if we want to stop by.
If you aren't feeling quite as lame as me, then here are the details. Go!

Shepard Fairey Invades DC
If you don't know who Shepard Fairey is, google him. Last friday he spoke at the Corcoran and since then I have been on a bit of a scavenger hunt around DC trying to find where he has put up some of his street art. I have heard he has hit about 20 spots, but so far I have only seen two. Which is probably a sign I need to be more aware of my surroundings. Here are some pics... (thanks crowls!)

Quote of the Day
"Exposed zippers I sewed myself into my clothes raises eyebrows and incomprehension--and after awhile trying to explain the thought process behind your outfit to someone who just dresses to protect themself from the elements gets old."

Photo of the Day
Don't ask me why, but this is one of the sexiest photos I have seen in a long time. It is the slight old school James Dean roughness mixed with the effortlessly put-together modern man.

Shop Old Navy Like It's 1492
No, I am being serious. In honor of upcoming Columbus Day, for October 4th and 5th, Old Navy stores nationwide will feature 1,492 items will be priced under $14.92. Now, something tells me it will be leftover summer gear and none of their super duper fancy duds, but for $14.92, do you really care? I mean, it's not like Columbus rocked the latest season's "it" fashion... or maybe he did.
Banana Republic to Benefit Goodwill Industries
It's hard not to love a do-gooder. Especially when there is a sweet reward.
From October 16 through October 26, anyone who donates their gently worn sweaters or coats at any Banana Republic will receive a 30 percent discount on all regularly priced Banana Republic merchandise during the same time period. Donated items will then be sold in Goodwill retail stores.
Time to start cleaning out your closet!
