Coffee Grinds and Ribbon Hearts

When I was 16, I worked at a local coffee shop. We were a close knit group with the skater, the punk, the preppy boy and me, the private school girl. We had secret words and special bonds that could only be made over raspberry mochas and nights mopping up coffee-covered floors. Inevitably crushes were to be had and feelings were to be handed out with someones afternoon latte. But being 16 no one knows what to do or how to deal because we're all really awkward at best.

And so one night my best friend called to tell me that he couldn't be only my friend any more because it was too hard and hurt too much. I cried because sometimes that's what I do and felt my heart break because sometimes that's what they do. And who's to say whether it's worse to have your heart broken or be the heartbreaker, because they can both hurt equally bad. But I bandaged it up and went back to my high school life of school and parties and fake ids. And along the way every now and then the bandage comes a little loose and I've had to tighten the knots. But in the end you realize that even the prettiest bow can come undone and underneath all of the bright layers of ribbon you're heart is still there in one piece.

Denim Leggings - Probably

I just read this bit about faux denim leggings. And while it sounds a little more Victoria Gotti than Gisele, I have to be honest... I'd probably try to rock them. Now that's not saying I wouldn't look ridiculous, but did you see what I wore for my birthday in AC?

Dropping the Ball

Weeks ago I was supposed to do a frugal fashionista piece for The Washingtonian. But work blended into free time which blended into sleep time which blended into me realizing I never made me-time and sat down to write. Excuses, excuses, cry me a river justin timberlake I am back on track and plan to write it while I am at my sister's cuddling my niece. She needs her first style lesson after all... and her ears pierced too!

Wrap Around It

Last night before the show, the looks of scarves was discussed, particularly on men. "Come on, maybe if we were in London" was the response I got to my encouragement for him to wrap up in one and go.
True, or maybe we could just bring a little of London here.

My Skin is Stressed

No surprise, I can get stressed. But ew, my skin doesn't need to show it. I have been on the search for a good face care line and after gilt.com sold out of the one I wanted, I found skyn ICELAND and their detox kit for stressed skin. Reviews of it are amazing, my skin is excited and it is cheaper than a massage.

Plus I love their tagline "The thought of animal testing stresses us out. That's why we test our products on humans."

The Look that Won't Die

Looks like the turban is still making the rounds in Europe.

The New Man in Your LIfe

Boyfriends jeans are everywhere right now and a pretty easy to get your hands on. Unless you don't actually have a boyfriend, than you are stuck shelling out big bucks for a pair rather than sneaking them out of your man's closet when he is in the shower. Roll them up, add a belt, some high heels, and run. Literally... before your better half catches you in his favorite pair of pants!

Total Inspiration

I usually wake up late, race to get ready and by the time I get off of the metro my hair is not how it looked when I left the house, my makeup has suddenly disappeared and I realize that not everything matches. But in my head, this is how I meant to look...

What's With The Mannequins, Old Navy?

My friend over at Modern Destiny filled me in on what the scoop is with Old Navy's new campaign with all of the mannequins.... er, actually they are called SuperModelquins. My first response was "They kind of creep me out."
But the entire campaign is really campy and clever and just pokes fun at fashion. They have the in a fake US magazine spread, they have facebook pages, they even look at their own butts. Click over to Modern Destiny to watch a You Tube video that is pretty classic. Still... they are just a little creepy...

More With the Shoulders

My favorite top when I was 10 or 11 years old was a yellow cotton sweatshirt that had puffy paint triangles all over it and a serious set of shoulder pads. I wore it in my school picture with my permed hair . I remember wearing it for my birthday. And chances are I wore it to the roller rink a few times too. It was the 80's... shoulder pads were hot. Even on a little tween girl.
But that was then and this is now. Are you going to try to pull them off again?

Things to Think About This Morning

1. why your alarm never seems to go off on monday morning
2. whether it is ok to wear a skirt with bare legs to work this early in the season... and whether or not you really care
3. really, shoulder pads are coming back?
4. In this economic downtown, is a $4 frozen yogurt still justifiable if you call it a dietary necessity
5. how exactly do they make glow in the dark champagne

kisses for monday.

My Newest Obsession

Grocery stores... not my favorite place. Too much time, pushy people, long lines. So a friend told me about Washington's Green Grocer and I decided to sign up. They are locally owned and deliver a mixed box of fresh fruit and veggies to my door. You chose the size of the box, you chose when they come. Think of them as your produce fairy.

Question of the Day

Q: Are banks more important than fashion houses, or vice versa?

A: If you live in Italy, then fashion houses (obvi).

The Italian gov't announced a plan to bail out fashion houses. Could you even imagine if the US did that... oh the uproar!

Snow Day

Wellie boots on my feet, snow crunching underneath, hat pulled down low and scarf wrapped all around. The sun is reflecting off the white on the ground and my mind's reflecting on things that will hopefully melt away with the last night's snow.

Resisting a nap in exchange for catching up on daily life, like errands and dry cleaning and finally tackling that bag full of clothes that have been begging for hangers for weeks now. Though nowhere in my day will be the power to resist plopping down in the snow, spreading my arms, and making a giant snow angel.
